American
Pulse™: Half
of Independents Won’t Re-Elect Washington
Officials Who Vote for Healthcare Reform, Rest of Country Tends to Agree
Most Want Smaller Government; Political Correctness Hurting Security
COLUMBUS, OH
– (MARKET WIRE) – 11/18/09 – Senators and House Representatives seeking
re-election in 2010 should take heed; 49.6% of all Americans say they will not
cast a ballot in favor of legislators who vote for healthcare reform, according
to the latest American Pulse™ of 5,899 people. Even more significant are the
all-important potential independent voters, 50.4% of which say they won’t
re-elect healthcare reform supporters. Regionally, Southerners are the most likely to
vote out supporters of the legislation at 54.6%, followed by those who live in
the Midwest (47.5%), West (46.4%) and Northeast (45.6%).
63.4% of Independents think the healthcare reform is too much too fast, which
could be one reason they aren’t likely to re-elect those who vote for it. 84.3%
of Republicans and 40.1% of Democrats agree. On the other hand, 15.7% of
Republicans, 36.6% of Independents, 59.9% of Democrats say Congress should move
forward with complete reform of the entire healthcare system.
Another reason many aren’t likely to re-elect legislators could be their desire
for smaller government. More than half of Americans (51.5%) favor smaller
government. 30.6% of Democrats, 60% of Independents and 74.4% of Republicans
agree, giving lawmakers something to consider as they push through healthcare
legislation.
